Sekondi-Takoradi, population 335,000, comprising the twin cities of Sekondi and Takoradi, is the capital of the Western Region of Ghana. In West Africa in general, and Ghana in particular, the issue of collection, management and disposal of solid waste continues to feature prominently in major towns and cities across the region. The contamination of water bodies leading to the spread of water-borne diseases and other various health hazards result from the haphazard collection and in some cases, ineffective transportation of solid waste. This serves to perpetuate the global/societal dilemma, which faces Ghana, especially in light of the country’s impending growth resulting from their significant energy finds.
